Furniture spacing: plan the movement, not just the objects
A layout checklist for doors, chairs, storage and walking routes.
Draw the full furniture footprint
Measure the maximum width and depth of each item, including arms, legs and handles. Resize the catalog symbols to match your products. Original symbols in the editor are representative shapes rather than manufacturer specifications.
Add the space used in motion
Chairs slide out, recliners extend, drawers open and doors swing. Use your product instructions and a physical test to establish the space these actions need. The Fit check tab tests the illustrated entry-door swings. Furniture movement such as drawers and recliners still needs your own inspection.
Test the walking routes
Trace the route people actually take through the room. Does it cross a conversation area? Can two people pass where that matters? Requirements vary by use, occupants and local accessibility guidance; this tool does not certify clearances.
Check overlaps from above
A rug under a sofa is an intentional overlap. A table across a doorway is probably not. Use Fit check in the left library panel to highlight intersecting furniture, walls, room boundaries and illustrated door swings. Rugs are excluded from the overlap check.
Validate before committing
Put masking tape on the floor to represent the largest furniture items, leaving the intended openings. Walk through it, open the doors and check access. Adjust the plan before making a purchase.
